KÓSMESIS

The ephemeral skin.

KÓSMESIS

Kósmesis is a proposal of material exploration inspired by archeology to speculate on the idea of ephemerality and beauty. To capture smells, textures, materialities that fade or evaporate, that disappear, to give them physicality. The proposal is to produce a series of “sensorial archeologies” built from a laboratory of experimentation with biomaterials. Surfaces that invite us to touch, to feel, to smell, to connect with the past from the present. Textures that are processes, superimposed times that transform and fade away, giving physicality to the changing nature. Transferring the canonical idea of beauty, smooth skin without imperfections, to a skin built from natural materials that generates affective and timeless links with the environment.

Inspired by the natural materials used to create Roman ointments in the Alicante area, I have worked with oils, olives, citrus fruits, grapes, cinnamon, incense, mud, clay, natural wax, honey, natural resins, salts, scallop shells ... to create these biomaterial archaeologies. The project is not just a final result. The process builds the artistic piece.
